A Psychological Reading of Scripture

The Lord is my Shepherd

In the progression of the Bible's narrative, the Psalms mark the moment when present consciousness begins to recognise and occupy a newly assumed identity. David, appearing throughout the Psalms, embodies this tender I AM state — the inner conviction seeking acknowledgement and enforcement within the mind. His cries, praises, and petitions represent YHVH/LORD (present consciousness) aligning with Ehyeh/I AM (assumed identity), while Elohim enforces the reality of this emerging state. Psalm 23, in particular, demonstrates the triad in operation: the formation, reinforcement, and consolidation of assumption within consciousness.

Psalm 23 begins:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1

Here, the triad functions as follows:

  • YHVH/LORD: Present consciousness recognising desire and current state.
  • Ehyeh/I AM: The assumed identity of sufficiency and guidance — the “shepherd” within imagination.
  • Elohim: The enforcing mechanism that ensures present consciousness experiences the reality of sufficiency as declared by the assumed I AM.

The "I shall not want" clause demonstrates the first stage of Ask → Believe → Receive: YHVH/LORD recognises need, assumes the I AM that already has it, and Elohim enforces that sufficiency within consciousness.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2

“Green pastures” and “still waters” symbolise the fertile conditions for the assumed identity to be occupied within present consciousness. YHVH/LORD rests in imagination; Ehyeh/I AM establishes peace and abundance; Elohim ensures the laws of reproduction and manifestation enforce the internal experience. The imagery reflects THREAD 1 (Seed → Fruit): the I AM as latent potential now expressed as lived experience.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Psalm 23:3

“Restoring the soul” depicts present consciousness being reshaped by the assumed identity. “Paths of righteousness” signify lawful expression of the I AM, enforced by Elohim. The phrase “for his name’s sake” encodes the intrinsic nature of David’s I AM state: relational favour and union. Numerically, Psalm 23 has six verses; six symbolises completeness within temporal experience — the soul is restored as a fully operational I AM under enforcement.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

The “valley of the shadow of death” represents obstacles, fears, or fragmented consciousness. Here, YHVH/LORD demonstrates courage by occupying the assumed I AM despite adversity. The “rod and staff” are Elohim’s instruments — the judicial enforcement ensuring that imagination (I AM) guides present consciousness safely through trials. THREAD 4 (Plurality) is evident: multiple internal voices may resist, but alignment under the I AM is enforced, producing unbroken confidence.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Psalm 23:5

The “table” reflects abundance and opportunity made manifest for present consciousness assuming the I AM. “Anointing with oil” signals empowerment — recognition of the state encoded in the name David (“Beloved”) — and Elohim’s enforcement ensures continuity of this state. “My cup runneth over” demonstrates reinforcement: the overflowing results of sustained assumption. Opposition (“enemies”) is irrelevant to the enforced reality; the assumed identity prevails through the statutes of Elohim.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23:6

“Goodness and mercy” are the experiential consequences of a fully enforced I AM. YHVH/LORD occupies the identity, Ehyeh/I AM is assumed, and Elohim perpetuates its manifestation. “Dwelling in the house of the Lord” represents a permanent state of consciousness — THREAD 6: From Garden to Kingdom — where present consciousness and the assumed identity are unified and continuously upheld. The triad is complete: present consciousness integrated with the assumed I AM, enforced by Elohim, producing enduring peace, abundance, and alignment with the inherent nature of the state David encodes.
