A Psychological Reading of Scripture

The Power of Hair in the Bible: Samson, Absalom, and the Symbolism of Thought

In Scripture, hair is symbolic not physical. Through the lens of Neville Goddard and the mechanics of consciousness, hair symbolizes the assumed identity (Ehyeh/I AM) as presented by YHVH/LORD (present consciousness) and enforced by Elohim (Judges & Rulers of that I AM). Samson and Absalom demonstrate how identity, when assumed or misaligned, is reflected externally according to the laws of consciousness.

Samson: Hair as the Strength of the Assumed Self

The name Samson means "sun" or "brightness," revealing a state of radiant strength and illumination. In the key, this corresponds to YHVH/LORD assuming the latent I AM (Ehyeh/I AM) of divine strength, enforced by Elohim. His hair is the outward code of that inner state. When aligned, his identity projects power; when misaligned, he loses it.

Judges 13:5 establishes this identity:

For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb, and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. – Judges 13:5

In Neville’s framework and the key:

  • YHVH/LORD: Samson’s present consciousness ready to embody Ehyeh/I AM.
  • Ehyeh/I AM: Samson’s assumed identity of unshakable strength and purpose.
  • Elohim: The internal Judges & Rulers enforcing that identity into manifestation.

Delilah cutting Samson’s hair symbolises the fracturing of alignment: YHVH/LORD is distracted from fully occupying Ehyeh/I AM, and Elohim enforces the natural outcome—loss of strength. Symbolically, it demonstrates how doubt or compromise of assumptions weakens manifestation.

And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. – Judges 16:17

Absalom: Hair as Attachment to Ego and External Validation

The name Absalom means "father of peace," though his story shows misalignment between YHVH/LORD and Ehyeh/I AM. His hair represents attachment to pride, beauty, and outward status, rather than to the latent assumed identity of divine favor or relational harmony. The enforcement by Elohim ensures that misaligned assumptions carry consequences.

In all Israel there was not a man so much praised for his beauty as Absalom: from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. – 2 Samuel 14:25

When Absalom’s hair becomes entangled in a tree, it demonstrates the mechanical enforcement of Elohim: external reality mirrors the misaligned I AM. His present consciousness (YHVH/LORD) is absorbed in ego-driven identity rather than the ideal Ehyeh/I AM.

And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. – 2 Samuel 18:9

Analysis of Hair as Identity Code

In both cases, hair encodes the assumed identity:

  • Samson: Alignment of YHVH/LORD with Ehyeh/I AM; Elohim enforces power and purpose. Identity = radiant strength, as his name declares.
  • Absalom: Misalignment of YHVH/LORD with Ehyeh/I AM; Elohim enforces consequences. Identity = pride and attachment, as his name ironically contrasts with his actions.

Hair, like a biblical name, signals the intrinsic nature of the state being assumed. YHVH/LORD occupies the state, Ehyeh/I AM declares it, and Elohim enforces the outcome. Misalignment results in natural consequences, illustrating the courtroom mechanics of consciousness.

Practical Takeaways

  • Maintain alignment: Like Samson, hold to your ideal Ehyeh/I AM so that Elohim enforces strength and manifestation.
  • Avoid attachment to ego: Like Absalom, do not let pride or external validation dominate your assumed identity; reality will enforce correction.
  • Names encode states: Samson (sun, radiant strength) and Absalom (father of peace) illustrate the power and danger of how names reveal the assumed identity.

In sum, Scripture’s hair symbolism demonstrates the active interplay of YHVH/LORD, Ehyeh/I AM, and Elohim. Alignment preserves power; misalignment produces entanglement. Hair encodes identity, just as names do, revealing the relational and psychological mechanics of consciousness at work.
